This Sabbath: “Defeating Temptation”

You may sometimes feel that a temptation is too overpowering for you to bear, but that’s a lie from Satan. God has promised never to allow more ON you than he puts WITHIN you to handle it. Four strategies for defeating temptation: 1. Refocus your attention, 2. Seek support of friend or support group, 3. Fight back, 4. Realize our vulnerability and choose to avoid certain temptations when possible. Text: 1 Corinthians 10:13. Remember that the temptations that come into your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can’t stand up against it. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you will not give into it.

Thrift Store Give-away September 18

The Apopka Rotary Club has asked SGF to change its Thrift Store (i.e. Barb Niswander’s garage) give-away from September 11 to the new date of September 18.

We will need many volunteers to assist.  Barb will have a sign-up sheet at the front desk for the next two Sabbaths, Sept. 4 and Sept. 11.  We plan to rent a big truck on Friday afternoon, Sept. 17, bring it to her garage, load up, and take it to SGF Friday night.  (We could use some strong-armed helpers to load the racks (on wheels) and boxes around 5:00 PM. that Friday night.)

We're hoping to have drivers and all helpers show up at 8:00 AM, Saturday, Sept. 18, at THE APOPKA CHIEF newspaper office to help set up tables, shade tents, and help organize the clothing to give away.  It's a big job, with many hands, it will go quickly

Doug Gondera plans to bring the SGF 1st Response Disaster Team "cooking trailer" again this year and will be serving hot dogs, potato chips, and bottled water. The Rotary Club will pay for the hot dogs and will help with the grilling. They will also help us with crowd control and other jobs as needed.

People are more likely to grow in their faith when their families put faith into practice at home. According to the Search Institute, “Four family practices are particularly important for helping young people grow in faith (both in childhood and adolescence): talking about faith with your mother; talking about faith with your father; having family devotions or prayer; and doing
family projects to help other people.”

CRAZY LOVE

"Your best life...later"

We've looked in depth at how insanely God loves us, and that we should respond in kind. This week, we look at what that might look like practically. How literally do we take Jesus' commands to care for the poor and needy? What would our lives look like if we rejected our typical notion of a Christ and Christianity that is moderate, safe, and "balanced" and truly committed ourselves wholeheartedly to loving obedience and service to the One who gave His all for us?

"Do you want to see God more than you desire security?...Christians today like to play it safe. We want to put ourselves in situations where we are safe 'even if there is no God.' But if we truly desire to please God, we cannot live that way. We have to do things that cost us during our life on earth but will be more than worth it in eternity...Dare to imagine what it would mean to take the words of Jesus seriously..."

What would your life look like, what would SGF look like, if you turned every thought, action, moment, dollar to the control of Christ?

-Chris
